PRIORITY NEEDS  – Shands at UF Cancer Hospital

In November, Shands HealthCare will open the Shands at the University of Florida Cancer Hospital and Raise Hope for all Floridians suffering from cancer. This step will dramatically change the way the people of Florida will receive cancer care.

Shands is building the hospital in response to increased demand for cancer services. One in seven adults hospitalized at Shands at UF each year is treated for cancer or cancer-related ailments. According to the American Cancer Society, Florida had more than 106,000 new cancer cases in 2007, making California the only state with a higher occurrence.

For decades, UF and Shands have advanced the fight against cancer through ground-breaking research, scientific discoveries and developing new technologies – many of which are now worldwide industry standard. Now Shands will have a facility to match its impressive tradition in research.

Putting the Patient First

Patients will receive leading-edge cancer treatment in an environment that focuses on the patients' well being through a holistic approach – mind, body and spirit. Every patient will have a private room. Patients will have access to such amenities as the Garden of Hope healing garden, Criser Cancer Resource Center and a meditation room and chapel. And through our collaboration with Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, we will employ its highly successful "Total Cancer Care" model.

There has never been a more opportune time to have a greater impact on cancer care. There has never been a better opportunity for Shands HealthCare and UF to expand our capabilities. At the intersection of these two opportunities is where our greatest progress will come. That is why we are embarking on a capital campaign with a focus on Raising Hope. Through patient-care therapies, research, clinical trials and community outreach, we are elevating the Science of Hope for every person in the state of Florida. We serve patients from every county in Florida and we need your help.

We have embarked on a $55 million capital campaign to help fund this historic cancer center. To date we have raised more than $30 million.
